Economic Hardship Reporting Project (EHRP) is a nonprofit organization that produces compelling journalism about income inequality and poverty in America. They’re accepting pitches from freelance journalists covering economic inequality. They’re especially interested in stories about economic precarity during election season, transgender rights and economic inequality in America, and working-class labor stories in Chicago and Southern California. They provide partial grants for news stories, narrative features, personal essays, investigative reports, documentaries, nonfiction comics and illustrated works, photo essays, and audio projects. News stories typically receive $750 to $1,500; narrative features and personal essays pay $0.40 to $1.25 per word, usually capped at $1,500; and investigative reports pay $0.70 to $1.25 per word, usually capped at $1,700. Grants for other formats range from $500 to $5,000, depending on the project. For more information, refer to their post and pitch portal.
