Cricket Magazine

Cricket Magazine, often referred to as the New Yorker for children, is a nationally distributed literary journal for kids. They publish short stories, non-fiction articles, poetry, and puzzles/crafts/activities for children. Most short stories they publish are 1200 to 1800 words in length. They previously indicated to pay 25 cents per word, but current pay rates are unclear. They are not always open to submissions. To learn more, refer to their submission guidelines.

Cricket Media is accepting submissions for eight themes

They have literary magazines for children of various ages, and have recently announced themed submission calls for each; they also accept unthemed submissions. They publish fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, as well as activities, games, puzzles, crafts, and recipes.
-- Babybug: (magazine for ages 6 months-3 years; themes – Let’s Play, about little ones’ favorite games; and Fantastic Fall, celebrating autumn);
-- Ladybug: (for 3-6 years; themes – Exploring Our World, non-fiction and poetry on compelling explorations of our world; and I Can Help, fiction, poetry, and more about young children learning how to think through problems and help themselves and others);
-- Spider (for 6-9 years; themes – Legendary Kids, retellings of folktales, fairytales, tall tales, and myths that cast a child as the clever problem-solver; and Outside the Box, going beyond contemporary stories and poems – includes science fiction, historical fiction, and non-fiction);
-- Cricket (for 9-14 years; themes – Ancient Worlds, historical fiction, non-fiction, myths and legends, and poetry about ancient cultures; and Game On!, featuring fiction, non-fiction, and poetry featuring a competition, game, rivalry, or challenge).
Length: Varies for all magazines – see guidelines
Pay: Up to $0.25/word for prose; $3/line for poetry; $75 for games, recipes, etc.
