Northern Woodlands

Northern Woodlands is a quarterly magazine publishing articles that aim at conservation-minded people. Topics include all aspects of the Northeast’s forests: wildlife species, woodworking, natural landscapes, and woodlot management. According to their guidelines, pay starts at $0.25 per word for new writers; poems pay $100; the "A Place in Mind" column pays $250 for around 800 words; and the "Knots and Bolts" column pays between $200 and $400 for 500 to 1,400 words, depending on length, complexity, and editing time. “Northern Woodlands’ audience consists of stewardship-minded people with an interest in all aspects of the forests of the (American) Northeast. Our articles and columns range in scope, and may include subjects such as ecology, forestry, practical how-tos and tools, nature education and access, conservation and habitat restoration, woodworking, and reflections on natural landscapes.” Writers have to query before pitching (see guidelines). They have features and columns. “A good way to break into our magazine is to write for "Knots and Bolts" (500-1,400 words), which cover a wide range of subjects.” Knots and Bolts pays $200-450, A Place in Mind column (~800 words) pays $250, book reviews (500-600 words) pay $150, poetry pays $100, and payment for features begins at $0.25/word for writers new to the magazine. They also say, “We don't mind working with unpublished writers who have a grasp of their material, and we enjoy helping subject matter experts make their prose more appropriate for a general audience. However, the more time we have to spend editing a piece, the less we will be able to pay for it.”  Stories are contracted by 15th October for the Spring issue and the copy deadline is 15th November. Northern Woodlands is open for submissions

Their audience consists of conservation-minded people with an interest in all aspects of the forests of the Northeast. Their articles and columns range in scope, and may include subjects such as woodlot management, wildlife species, woodworking, and reflections on natural landscapes. They publish book reviews, various columns (see guidelines), poems, and features. Pay is $0.15/word features, for writers new to the magazine. They are not reviewing personal essays currently. For their ‘Spring’ issue, stories are contracted by 15 October May and the copy deadline is 15 November 2021. Details here.
