  • History News Network (HNN) is a publishing project that “puts current events into historical perspective.” They’re accepting pitches for their newsletter. The newsletter features short-form essays and conversations that “help readers make sense of the ways in which currents from the past continue to swirl through the present.” The published pieces are generally 1,000 to 1,500. According to their pitch guide, they pay $375.

  • Perspectives on History is the news magazine of the American Historical Association (AHA)-an organization that serves historians in all fields and professions. They publish 9 times a year in print and online. They welcome “pitches on all aspects of the practice of history—from the public square to the private study.” According to their submissions guidelines, articles published in print receive a $100 honorarium. 

  • The Archive explores “the lost chapters of the past—from history’s enduring mysteries to astonishing encounters with the natural world.” They welcome pitches from freelancers. According to an old post by their senior editor, they pay $100 for 800 to 1,000 words. To pitch them, visit this page.

  • The Austin Séance is “a modern recreation of an old-time séance.” They accept guest posts for their website. They want “content relating to the history of the American spiritualist movement, spiritualist devices, documented hauntings and descriptions of spooky travel destinations — especially those in Texas.” The submissions typically run about 500 words. According to their guidelines for guest bloggers, payment is $75 per accepted submission. 

  • Contingent Magazine is a nonprofit online magazine for “everyone who asks questions about the past.” They prioritize pitches from people who have completed postgraduate work in history or a history-adjacent field. According to their pitch guide, they pay a base rate of $500 for features (2,000 to 3,000 words), $300 for shorts (800 to 1,500 words), and $300 for reviews (1,000 to 1,500 words). 

  • Ancient History is a bi-monthly magazine focused on the politics, society, culture, art, literature, language, religion, and economics of the ancient world. They want writers to send proposals (of about 250 words) for articles. The exact word count of the articles will be decided by their editor in chief, but they should roughly be about 2,000 to 4,000 words long. According to their pitch guide, they pay 10 euro cents per word. 

  • Wartime is a print magazine that specifically focuses on Australian history during times of war. They accept proposals from both amateurs and professionals, and demand an engaging writing style. Stories are typically 1,000 to 2,000. According to their submissions guidelines, pay is $300 per 1,000 words.

  • Smithsonian Magazine ‘’places a Smithsonian lens on the world, looking at the topics and subject matters researched, studied and exhibited by the Smithsonian Institution—science, history, art, popular culture and innovation.’’ They accept proposals from established freelance writers. When sending in your pitch for a history article, you must supply links to previously published works. While no pay is listed on their website, according to one payment report, they paid $0.23 per word. A now deleted Tweet also indicated their print rates are $2.00 per word.   • Naval History is a print magazine published by the U.S. Naval Institute. They are a tough market to break into and prefer to receive queries from freelance writers. Articles should have fewer than 3,000 words. According to their submissions guidelines, payment rates are $60-$150 per estimated published page (1,000 words). Book reviews are $75 each, and pictorials range from $250-$500. Anecdotes are paid at $25 each.
