  • Wine Maker Magazine is for home winemakers in the U.S. and Canada. They aim to "capture the spirit and challenge of winemaking’ while helping their readers make the best wine they can. The length of articles is generally 1,500 to 3,000 words. According to their submission guidelines, they pay between $75 to $300, depending on the length and complexity of the article as well as the experience of the writer.

  • Cheese Connoisseur is a trade magazine and website for all things cheese. They cover "specialty cheeses, celebrity cheesemakers, chefs, wines, travel opportunities, and complementary foods and beverages."   • Civil Eats is a source for daily news about the American food system. They are particularly interested in stories from diverse voices and featuring people whose stories don’t often make it into the news. According to a payment report, they paid $0.33 per word.   • Briarpatch is a Canadian magazine that covers "current events, grassroots activism, electoral politics, economic justice, ecology, labour, food security, gender equity, indigenous struggles, international solidarity, and other issues of political importance." They welcome pitches from freelancers. According to their pitch guide, they pay $150 for profiles, short essays, reviews and reading lists, online-only articles, and parting shots (less than 1,500 words), $250 for feature stories (1,500 to 2,000 words) and photo essays, and $350 for research-based articles and investigative reportage (2,000-2,500 words). 

  • Saltscapes is for and about people on Canada’s East Coast. They focus on the region's traditional lifestyle, with bias towards rural life. They previously indicated articles could be on people, places, history, natural world, food and art and that they paid CAD0.50 to 0.45/word, and CAD0.05/word for non-exclusive web rights.   • Vancouver Boulevard Chinese Magazine is a west coast luxury lifestyle magazine serving the Chinese-speaking communities of Metro Vancouver.   • edibleSeattle is a quarterly print and online regional food magazine covering the food scene in the Puget Sound region. They are largely freelance written and accept new stories between 300 and 1,500 words, and those include essays, poetry, and recipes about food, land, and life in Western Washington. According to their guidelines, pay is 30 cents per word, with max rates applicable per article.   • Ventana Monthly wants sophisticated, tightly focused articles related to Ventura County. Articles run from 400 to 1,500 words.   • Kentucky Monthly features articles on Kentucky’s culture, food, history, lifestyle, outdoors, travel and human interest. They prefer writers who possess a bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or related field, or commensurate writing experience. Features typically run between 1,000 and 2,500 words. According to their contributor guidelines, payment is 15 cents a word, and they will negotiate package prices for freelancers who provide both story and photography.

  • Washington City Paper is a source for local news for D.C. natives and newcomers. Stories should be about the city and its surroundings, and narratives with a conflict of some sort at the center are preferred. They publish a variety of journalistic genres, including profiles, investigative pieces, polemical essays, stories about local institutions, and an occasional first person narrative. They have a variety of reader’s categories like Velo, Climbing Yoga, Clean Eating and more. Their pieces cover foot-based travel, backcountry experience, North American destinations, and other topics that they highlight.   • Hawaii Magazine is a regional travel magazine with a readership of more than 250,000 per issue.
